This is probably down to a combination of both preference and following the meta of Pokemon. By that I mean, you find Pokemon you like and enjoy using but make sure that in the competitive field that your choice is not useless or underpowered. This is exactly what i did with my favourite Pokemon Gardevoir. She is a pretty good Psychic type but she isn't competitive whatsoever. The recent changes to make her into a Fairy type might raise her ability but I have yet to get one of my own so I can't say.
I decided to look up the actual Pokemon Meta for Black and White 2. It's currently the closest thing we have to the X and Y meta so it will have to do for now. What I found was certainly interesting and watching the Championships revealed some decent picks. Sadly, I don't use Legendaries or Pseudo Legendaries in my teams but after some research, it looks like I will need to change my opinions of them to fit them into my team. Namely: Garchomp.
I realised that this Pokemon wasn't just badass but he was starting to take the world by storm. Why does nobody use him? He's almost always banned even in casual contests. He's fast, he's strong and he can sweep teams by himself. No wonder they had to add fairy's to the game otherwise he would steam-roll yet again. Here's an idea of what a Garchomp is capable of:
Dragonite is a very common high tier dragon type that some people still call ' The best Dragon' because he is both durable, fast and can learn a vast array of type effective moves. Garchomps speed however outmatches Dragonite easily. A neutral natured Dragonite with max speed at level 100 might be faster than a Garchomp but in all likeliness, Garchomp will be 40-60 points faster unless you deliberately train him to have a low speed stat.
This is important because the first strike in a Dragon vs Dragon fight is always crucial. If you don't take the enemy out in one, your screwed. Dragonite was often picked because he could use Blizzard, Thunder, Hyper Beam etc. Garchomp makes short work of any dragon like this because he gains so much power from STAB attacks (attacks of the same type as the Pokemon). His Health is higher than Dragonites as well so chances are he will survive whatever Dragonite throws at him. Somebody thought this Pokemon would be a good idea.
Sure. Garchomp is probably aced by some other Ice type or something that can take advantage of his Ground type but I doubt it. Maybe you can see why I want a Garchomp...
