This is more of a question than an answer. What on earth do I want to play? What do any of us want to play? What has happened to MMORPG's these past few years? Has anything good actually been released lately? Why am I asking so many rhetorical questions?
Online Roleplaying games such as World of Warcraft, Runescape, Guild Wars and all of the other games on the market have found a place in my heart and I doubt I will ever stop playing them. Ever since I started my first Night Elf Hunter several years ago on WoW, I was sucked into the craze that is Online Gaming. Nothing was better than comparing my characters and achievements with other players and close friends. I could show off and prove that I was better than everyone else, even when I wasn't.
But what has happened to this? Why don't MMORPG's stick in our minds for more than a few months now?
Innovative games such as Tera Rising, Guild Wars 2 and Vindictus all try to do something different and keep you locked on their game but it's never enough. Tera and Vindictus sport brilliant combat systems whereas Guild Wars 2 changed everything we knew about traditional MMORPG grinds. Sadly, they all turn out to be dragged down by their slow levelling processes and pretty mixed character progression. Where Tera wants you to feel like you are playing a traditional MMO, Guild Wars 2 gives you a flat levelling curve so level 1 to 2 feels the same as levelling from 79 to 80. I don't even know what Vindictus did to their levelling system as I have been drowning in experience points just by chatting with the locals.
Do games like this have to take weeks to get anywhere? Sure, PVP and PVE content can be fun but is it anything we haven't already done before? Will Elder Scrolls Online give us something new to do? Will Black Desert Online be the smash hit we want it to be? Will I shut up already? Chances are, no.
